Introduction
Curriculum Framework The Curriculum of Western English Language School is based on the Victorian Curriculum and Standards Framework (CSF.) The CSF is organised into eight Key Learning Areas (KLAs) - English, Mathematics, Science, Technology, Arts, Health and Physical Education, and LOTE - and provides the basis for curriculum planning, assessment and reporting on for student in years Prep-10 in Victorian Government Schools. (WELS does not provide LOTE)
Curriculum Goal The overall goal of WELS' curriculum is to provide students with the English language skills and cultural understanding necessary to begin their transition into the Australian schooling system as well as the society at large.
Learning Needs and Teaching Focus As students enter WELS from a diverse range of cultural and academic backgrounds a high priority is given to identifying and addressing the individual learning needs of all students. In the very early stages of learning English, the curriculum initially focuses on the English language skills, cultural understandings and content necessary for students to interact with others in English and perform routing classroom tasks. As students' English develops the teaching focus shifts toward the language and content of the mainstream curriculum. To do this teachers adapt the content of the Key Learning Areas in ways which are appropriate for needs of ESL students.
Assessment and Reporting Students are assessed each term against the ESL Companion to the English CSF, which outlines learning outcomes appropriate for ESL students, within the overall framework of the CSF. Each term parents are provided with a report in their own language on their child's progress. Parents also have the opportunity to discuss their child with the aid of an interpreter at parent-teacher interviews.
When students exit from the Language School a comprehensive report is provided to the exit school outlining students skills in Listening and Speaking, Reading, Writing as well as Social Skill and Learning Behaviours. It also provides their mainstream teacher with a record of language content covered in KLA's.
